Alberta Suspends Provincial Fuel Tax Amid Rising Oil Prices

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has welcomed a three-month suspension of the provincial fuel tax in Alberta, effective from October 1st to December 31st. The move comes as a response to rising world oil prices. Premier Danielle Smith's government made the announcement on Tuesday, citing the growing cost of gasoline and diesel.

The suspension is a temporary reprieve for Albertans who have been struggling with high fuel costs. However, the federation notes that a rebate cheque program introduced in the summer was met with difficulties, as only about a third of applicants were successful in retrieving their money. Alberta director Kris Sims attributed this to issues with the website and concerns over uploading personal information online.
