Alberta Unveils Plan for New Royalty Framework to Boost Oil Production
Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith announced plans for a new preferential royalty framework to encourage oil and gas production in the province. This move is part of Alberta's efforts to boost oil production and export more crude oil to Asia, reducing dependence on exports to the US.
The proposed framework would be designed to attract investments in new oil production, with Premier Smith stating 'I suspect that you're going to see a lot of interest in being able to fill that pipeline.' Alberta owns 81% of the mineral rights and sets conditions and royalties for resource development.
The provincial government is also working on a 1 million-barrels-per-day oil pipeline to the British Columbia coast, with federal approval expected by October 2026. This project, known as the West Coast Oil Pipeline, would partner with Trans Mountain Corporation and Pembina Pipeline.
