Alberta Votes on Potential Secession from Canada
A proposed referendum in Alberta, Canada could potentially lead to the province's secession from the country. Premier Danielle Smith has announced that a vote will be held on October 19, which would determine whether the government should initiate the process of separating from Canada.
The question on the ballot will read: 'Should Alberta remain a province of Canada or should the Government of Alberta commence the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a binding provincial referendum on whether or not Alberta should separate from Canada?'
Some residents in Alberta feel that the federal government has too much control over internal matters, particularly when it comes to the oil and natural gas industry. They believe that Ottawa's eco-friendly legislation has hindered progress for the province's energy sector.
While Premier Smith has stated her support for a unified Canada, some individuals are already making plans for a potential independent Alberta. Keith Wilson, co-leader of Let Alberta Decide, has launched the Alberta Transition Council to focus on building the foundations for a functioning sovereign state.
