Albertans Set to Vote on Separation from Canada
The province of Alberta is set to hold a referendum on October 19, 2026, to decide whether there should be a binding vote on separating from Canada. The issue of western alienation in Alberta has its roots in the 1980s when the federal government under Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau introduced the National Energy Program.
The program kept domestic oil prices below world levels to promote Canadian energy security and increase the federal share of oil revenues, which Alberta saw as an unjustified attack and a federal money grab. The issue was later settled, but discontent with Ottawa continued.
In 2023, Danielle Smith won government in Alberta on a platform of further asserting independence from Ottawa. Unlike her predecessor Jason Kenney, Premier Smith refused to characterize separatists as fringe extremists, saying they have valid grievances that deserve to be aired.
