Albertans to Decide Fate of Province in Upcoming Independence Referendum
Alberta, a province in Canada, is set to vote on whether it should become an independent country. The movement for separation has gained momentum, with some polls suggesting up to 30% of the population supports independence. Christopher Scott, a cafe owner and prominent voice in the separatist movement, believes Alberta's natural resources are being exploited by the federal government.
The province contributes more than $304 billion to Canada's federal budget between 2007/08 and 2026/27, according to the conservative Fraser Institute. However, Albertans feel they receive too little in return, with some arguing that their sovereignty is being eroded.
Supporters of separation have been met with opposition from Indigenous leaders, who claim that independence would affect their treaty rights. The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has also warned of the potential consequences of a breakup, likening it to Brexit's turmoil.
