Albertans to Vote on Separation Referendum Amid Ongoing Western Alienation

Albertans head to the polls on October 19 to vote on whether there should be a future, binding referendum on the province separating from Canada.

The issue of western alienation has been ongoing for decades, with key events contributing to the current state. The federal government's National Energy Program in 1980 kept domestic oil prices below world levels, promoting Canadian energy security and increasing the federal share of oil revenues, but viewed by Albertans as an unjustified attack and a federal money grab.

In 2019, the United Conservative Party under Jason Kenney won power in Alberta, capitalizing on discontent over federal rules and policies deemed to impair Alberta's ability to create wealth. Premier Kenney fought for more independence from Ottawa but remained a staunch advocate for the province staying in Confederation.

The current push for a separation referendum began in 2025 when Mark Carney and the Liberals won a minority government, followed by Premier Danielle Smith announcing a panel to discuss Alberta's future in Canada. While her government wouldn't put separation on the ballot, they would honour a successful citizen petition seeking such a vote.

Thomas Lukaszuk launched a 'Forever Canadian' petition to affirm the province stays in Canada, collecting over 400,000 names, but Smith questioned whether it was for a referendum or among legislature members. Months later, Mitch Sylvestre's separatist petition was deemed successful with around 223,000 signatures.

A court decision quashed the separatist petition, ruling Smith's government didn't properly consult First Nations as required in the Constitution, and the issue remains in legal limbo. Smith later promised to challenge the ruling and announced a 10th referendum question asking whether Alberta should stay in Canada or hold a binding vote on separation.
