Alberta's Low-Tariff Status May Be Thanks to Smith's Negotiation Strategy
Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta has been criticized for her approach to trade negotiations with the Trump administration, but new analysis suggests that her strategy may have paid off.
According to economist Trevor Tombe, approximately 13.7% of British Columbia's exports to the United States are exposed to the latest U.S. tariffs, followed by Quebec at 10.8% and Ontario at 9%. In contrast, Alberta sits at just 1%, making it one of the provinces least exposed to tariffs.
Smith opposed retaliatory measures and repeatedly warned against threatening to restrict Alberta oil and gas exports to the U.S., which are a crucial component of the province's economy. Her approach has been met with criticism from other premiers, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has made confrontational statements towards the Trump administration.
