Alfredo Duno Emerges as Reds' Next Silver Slugger Contender
The Cincinnati Reds have a mixed history with the Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, with notable players like Joey Votto never winning despite their stellar careers. This year, the team has several candidates for the honor, including Elly De La Cruz, CJ Abrams, and Otto Lopez, though the competition remains fierce. Looking ahead, however, one prospect stands out as a future Silver Slugger winner: Alfredo Duno.
Duno, a 20-year-old catcher, is currently MLB Pipeline's No. 21 prospect. Signed for $3.1 million out of Venezuela, he quickly made a name for himself with a .945 OPS in the DSL as a 17-year-old. After overcoming injuries in 2024, he bounced back in 2025 with a .948 OPS at Daytona. This season, he started at Dayton, hitting .260/.390/.512 with 16 homers over 65 games, earning a spot in the midseason Futures Game.
The real test came when Duno was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga at the end of June. Despite being nearly four years younger than his average competition, he has slashed .322/.406/.488 with three homers over 32 games. His strikeout rate improved from 26.8% at Dayton to 16.7% at Chattanooga, showing impressive adaptability. His elite bat speed, strike zone recognition, and raw power make him a strong candidate for future Silver Slugger honors.
The only potential roadblock is whether Duno can remain behind the plate. While he has a strong arm and athleticism, his defensive skills are still developing. If he moves to a corner infield spot, the competition for the award will be tougher. However, his offensive potential is undeniable, and he is widely regarded as a future Silver Slugger winner.
