Algeria and Niger Strengthen Energy Partnership with Focus on Hydrocarbons
Algeria and Niger are strengthening their energy partnership, with hydrocarbons at its core. The two countries have agreed to expand cooperation across the entire petroleum value chain, from exploration and production to refining, maintenance, logistics, training, and fuel distribution.
Sonatrach, Algeria's national oil and gas company, is taking a key role in this effort. Its technical expertise will support Niger's efforts to develop its domestic hydrocarbon resources and strengthen its refining and petroleum-supply capabilities.
The discussions between officials and energy-sector delegations from both countries focused on the BILMA oil block in eastern Niger, which could potentially produce more than 20,000 barrels per day over an estimated 20-year production period. Sonatrach will review the feasibility study for the development of the BILMA block and provide expertise to move the project forward.
Additionally, Algeria will support Sonidep in developing and implementing the field development plan, providing technical expertise across various stages of hydrocarbon reservoir development and exploitation. The partnership is also extending into petroleum-product logistics and distribution through cooperation between Algeria's Naftal and Niger's Sonidep.
