Kharg Island Oil Hub Sparks Tensions Between Iran and US
The Kharg Island oil hub has become a focal point in the escalating tensions between Iran and the US, following an AI-generated tweet by President Donald Trump that appeared to show the island being destroyed.
A US official later stated that the military had not targeted the island, and conditions at Kharg were calm, with oil operations ongoing and workers repairing previous damage and modernizing facilities, according to Hamid Bovard, chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company.
The US imposed a naval blockade on Iran in April, disrupting oil exports from Kharg Island, which had been the third-largest producer in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. Before the war, 90% of Iran's crude was exported via Kharg.
The US has previously carried out strikes on military targets at Kharg, but these did not impact oil infrastructure. Trump's tweet sparked concerns about a potential attack on the island, which would put further pressure on Iran's oil industry and economy.
