Alliant Energy Gas Plant Project Faces Scrutiny Over Cost Effectiveness

The Office of Consumer Advocate (OCA) has called for more scrutiny and proof that Alliant Energy's Riverhawk Energy Center project is cost-effective. The OCA made this request in a recent filing to the Iowa Utilities Commission, citing concerns about affordability for current customers if costs are passed on.

The proposed 1,200-megawatt natural gas turbine plant has an estimated capital cost between $2.1 billion and $3.2 billion, not including ongoing expenses. The OCA argues that this is a significant amount that raises concerns about affordability for IPL's current customers.

IPL responded by saying that costs from the project cannot be passed on to customers without IUC review at a rate proceeding, contradicting the OCA's claim.
