Alumina Output Rebounds in September Amid Regional Disruptions
Overseas metallurgical alumina output in September 2026 showed a moderate recovery, driven by Brazil's Alunorte returning to full-capacity operation after a temporary production cut. The refinery contributed a full month of output in September, making up for the 100,000-120,000 tonnes of production curtailed due to a natural gas supply interruption.
Al Taweelah in the Middle East also continued its restart, with about 25% of the plant's 1,262 electrolytic cells restarted as of August 22. The new recycling plant is operating at 10% load and targeting full capacity by year-end.
However, regional disruptions persist: geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East intensified again in mid-September, affecting smelters such as Bahrain's Alba and Qatar's Qatalum. An alumina producer in Australia has implemented production cuts, suppressing output in the region.
