Aluminium Wiring Gains Ground in Electric Vehicles

The traditional dominance of copper in vehicle wiring is being challenged by aluminium, thanks to the growing demand for lightweight materials in electric vehicles (EVs).

EV manufacturers such as Ferrari and BMW are adopting aluminium power cables that can reduce wiring weight by up to 20%, while Tesla and Chinese EV makers are also integrating aluminium conductors into their vehicle platforms.

The shift towards aluminium is driven by the need to reduce vehicle weight, control material costs, and improve overall efficiency in EVs. Every kilogram saved can contribute to improved vehicle efficiency and help offset some of the additional weight associated with batteries.

The economic case for aluminium wiring has become increasingly compelling due to elevated copper prices. According to GEM Mining Consulting, the copper-to-aluminium price ratio has consistently hovered around or above 3.5 times since 2020, making material substitution commercially feasible.
