A federal court in Sonora has suspended construction on the $6.8 billion Amigo LNG terminal, a major project aimed at turning Mexico into a Pacific export hub for US natural gas bound for Asia.

The suspension was ordered by a judge after environmental organization Nuestro Futuro challenged the project's environmental impact assessment and permitting process.

The court ruling halts the project's progress while the case is resolved, leaving its future uncertain.
