Amit Shah Unveils India's First LNG-Powered Train Amid Railway Electrification Push

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off the country's first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered train from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Railway Station on September 27. The project is part of a series of railway initiatives launched in the Sabarmati Division, which involved an investment of Rs 1,472 crore.

According to Shah, the projects are aimed at addressing environmental concerns while improving passenger convenience, safety, and connectivity. He highlighted the transformation of Sabarmati Railway Station and its facilities as part of these efforts.

Shah also emphasized the importance of reducing diesel consumption in Indian Railways. He noted that the government had made significant progress in this area, with diesel consumption decreasing from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25. The goal is to bring diesel consumption down to zero by 2030.

In addition, Shah praised the increase in railway electrification, which has risen significantly since 2010-11, from just 75 km to over 7,188 km in 2023-24. He added that 99.6% of the railway network had been electrified.
