Angola's state-owned oil firm Sonangol has made a significant discovery in its exploration of Block 24 of the Benguela Basin. The company, along with partner ANPG, successfully drilled an appraisal well called Katambi-2 that confirmed good reservoir potential for both oil and gas production.

The Katambi-2 well crossed two productive intervals, showing quality metrics higher than those from the Katambi-1 well, which was drilled by BP over a decade ago. The discovery is a major boost to Angola's efforts to reverse years of falling oil production and develop non-associated gas resources.

Initial tests at Katambi-2 showed a stabilized production rate of 1,160 barrels per day (bpd) of condensate and 41 million standard cubic feet (MMscfd) of gas. No presence of water or hydrogen sulfide was found in the well, indicating its economic viability.
