Europe's Gas Storage Hits Lowest Level in Over a Decade Amid Supply Concerns
Europe's natural gas storage levels have hit their lowest mark for early August in over a decade, sparking concerns about supply security and potential price volatility ahead of winter. According to Gas Infrastructure Europe data, EU gas storage facilities were only 57% full as of August 5th.
This is significantly lower than the nearly 70% recorded at the same time last year. Storage injections have been slower than expected due to tighter global LNG supply and disruptions linked to the Middle East crisis, which has reduced cargo availability for Europe and increased competition from Asian buyers.
Analysts warn that lower inventories could leave the market more vulnerable to price fluctuations during the winter months, particularly if colder-than-normal weather increases heating demand. Wood Mackenzie notes that limited growth in global LNG supply and firm demand in Asia will likely keep gas prices elevated through the season.
