Angola’s Economy Hinges on Oil Prices

Angola’s economy is deeply tied to oil prices because oil and gas exports make up the largest share of the country’s revenue. This dependence is rooted in historical and economic factors that have shaped Angola’s financial landscape.

During the civil war that followed independence, the petroleum industry was largely shielded from conflict and avoided nationalization. As a result, it became the only sector capable of generating consistent income while other industries, like agriculture, suffered collapse.

Since the war ended in 2002, the government has prioritized economic reconstruction, with much of the progress fueled by petroleum revenues. The sector’s dominance has left Angola vulnerable to global oil price fluctuations, particularly since a large portion of its crude oil is exported to key markets like China.

Despite having other valuable resources, such as diamonds and hydroelectric potential, the petroleum industry remains the backbone of Angola’s state revenue.
