Ansar Allah Seizes Control of Red Sea Coast, Disrupting Saudi Oil Route

Saudi Arabia's control over Yemen's Red Sea coast has been disrupted after Ansar Allah fighters seized key ports and islands, gaining control of the southern exit from a major oil route. This development marks a significant shift in the balance of power in the region.

Ansar Allah, an independent Yemeni movement allied with Iran, took control of the Red Sea port of Mocha and Mayyun Island in the Bab al-Mandab strait on September 10, 2026. The movement has declared a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia, disrupting its oil exports and forcing it to cut production.

Despite controlling the skies with its U.S.-made F-15s and British-supplied Typhoons, Saudi Arabia's air superiority does not translate to control over the ground. Ansar Allah's victory has been met with continued bombing raids by Saudi warplanes, but the movement remains determined to resist.

The conflict in Yemen began 11 years ago when Saudi Arabia launched a military campaign against Ansar Allah, which had taken control of the capital Sanaa. Despite extensive U.S. support, including satellite surveillance and targeting intelligence, the bombing has failed to restore Saudi control over Yemen.

The war on Yemen has resulted in devastating humanitarian consequences, with an estimated 377,000 people killed by the end of 2021. The conflict has also had a significant economic impact, with oil production falling to its lowest level since 1990 due to Ansar Allah's maritime embargo.
