Appeals Court Clears Way for $5B Loan for TotalEnergies LNG Project in Mozambique
A U.S. appeals court has decided not to block a nearly $5 billion loan from the Trump administration for a TotalEnergies project in Mozambique, allowing the liquefied natural gas (LNG) development to proceed.
The loan was initially approved in 2019 and was worth an estimated $4.7 billion, making it the largest in the agency's history at the time. The funds were set aside for a TotalEnergies project that aims to tap approximately 65 trillion cubic feet of gas in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province.
The loan faced opposition from U.S. and African environmental groups who sought to undo it, citing concerns about the project's impact on local communities and the environment. However, the appeals court has decided not to intervene, paving the way for TotalEnergies to continue with the project.
