Aramco's Record Profits Mask Growing Cash Flow Concerns

Saudi Aramco's second-quarter results have been hailed as a financial windfall due to geopolitical turmoil, but beneath the surface lies a growing cash flow crisis. The company's adjusted net income has reached $33.4 billion, with first-half adjusted earnings standing at $67.2 billion.

However, analysis suggests that free cash flow is deteriorating sharply despite a dramatic increase in realized crude prices. In fact, Aramco's second-quarter free cash flow of $12.3 billion only covers around 56% of shareholder distributions. This means there is a financing gap of around $13 billion, even before acquisitions or strategic investments are considered.

The company still has one of the strongest balance sheets in the global energy industry and can access debt markets easily if needed, but this divergence between accounting profits and available cash should be noted by investors. The national oil's realized crude price increased from $76.90 per barrel in the first quarter to $108.10 per barrel in the second quarter.

Aramco is reaping the rewards of an unusually favorable combination of constrained global supply, elevated geopolitical risk premiums, and resilient export capability. However, these conditions are unlikely to remain permanently aligned, and investors should be cautious not to interpret today's earnings as the new normal.
