Argentina Eyes Biofuels Boom Amid Energy Transition

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Pan American Liquid Biofuels Coalition (CPBIO) are teaming up to support Argentina's energy transition. Agustín Torroba, IICA biofuels specialist and CPBIO representative, spoke at a panel discussion on global biofuel trends.

Torroba highlighted Argentina's growing supplies of sugarcane, corn, and soybeans, which could be used for additional biomass development. He noted that over 80% of ethanol consumed globally is used in countries or regions with sustainability requirements, creating potential economic opportunities for producers who can meet environmental certification standards.

Argentina has a surplus of corn in the north, providing an opportunity for ethanol production. Torroba also pointed to Brazil's flexible plants as a potential model, which process sugarcane and corn during different harvest periods.
