Argentina's Copper Pipeline: A Structural Gap Between Promise and Production
Argentina is home to four large copper projects that have the potential to significantly impact global copper supply. These projects, Los Azules, MARA, Vicuña, and Taca Taca, are all at various stages of development but none has yet reached commercial production.
The combined peak output of these four projects would approach 1 million tonnes per year, which is comparable to the single largest copper mine on the planet, Escondida in Chile. The Vicuña district alone is projected to produce over 500,000 tonnes of copper a year at its peak.
While RIGI (Argentina's Large Investment Incentive Regime) approval has been granted for three of these projects, it only addresses fiscal risk and does not resolve permitting timelines, water rights, infrastructure access, or community acceptance. These structural forces are keeping announced mines from becoming operating ones.
