Arkansas Rice Production Hits Lowest Level in Nearly Half Century

Rice production in Arkansas has reached its lowest level in nearly half a century. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), only 851,000 acres were planted this season, down from the projected 1 million. The decline is attributed to oversupply and saturated international markets.

Jarrod Hardke, rice extension agronomist, said that producers had large crops in recent years, leading to an oversupply situation. He also mentioned that India and South America increased their rice production, further contributing to the market saturation.

Despite a slight improvement in rice prices this spring, it was not enough to deter farmers from planting fewer acres. Scott Stiles, extension economics program associate for the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, said that the price spikes in fertilizer and fuel had no influence on corn acres but may have impacted rice production.

The state's rice acres are projected to dwindle by next spring due to dwindling stock supplies. However, this could be offset by increased international market growth. Hardke noted that there is at least one glimmer of hope for the industry.
