Armed Group Shuts Down Libyan Pipeline Valve, Reducing Production
An armed group in Libya has shut down a pipeline valve from the Al-Sharara oil field, leading to a significant reduction in production. The National Oil Corporation (NOC) reported that the closure caused a pressure buildup within the crude oil pipeline, affecting production at the Sharara field.
The disruption threatens production from the Al-Sharara field, which is a key source of crude for Libya and holds Africa's largest proven oil reserves. If the shutdown continues, the NOC could be compelled to declare force majeure, allowing suppliers to suspend contractual obligations due to circumstances beyond their control.
Libya has been plagued by violence and instability since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with various armed groups and protesters frequently targeting oil fields, pipelines, and export terminals. The country remains divided between the UN-recognised government in Tripoli and the rival administration in the east.
