Asia Leads Global Gas and LNG Infrastructure Growth
Natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) are emerging as the fossil fuel industry's most significant growth markets, driven by rising electricity demand and climate policies.
According to data from Global Energy Monitor (GEM), Asia dominates the global landscape for gas-fired power generation capacity, with around 950,000 megawatts (MW) in operation, compared to about 735,000 MW across the Americas and roughly 366,000 MW in Europe.
The region has an additional 140,000 MW under construction, which is over three times more than any other region. The U.S. has the largest operating gas-fired capacity, with around 562,000 MW in operation, while China has the most capacity under construction.
Asia also leads in pipeline capacity under construction, with nearly 56,000 km currently being built, with China and India having the largest buildouts at 22,000 km and 15,000 km respectively. The U.S. has the largest LNG export capacity, but Asia ranks first among regions for export infrastructure.
