Asiama Steps Down from GoldBod Board Amid Conflict of Interest Concerns
Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama announced that he resigned from the GoldBod board five months ago, citing that his personal presence on the board is not a legal requirement. The Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025, Act 1140, only requires the central bank's representation, which can be done by either the governor or another employee of appropriate rank.
The decision comes after concerns were raised by Ghana's New Patriotic Party over Asiama's membership on the GoldBod board and potential conflict of interest arising from holding both positions. The party expressed worries about ties between the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod, including the central bank's involvement in financing gold purchasing operations.
The governor stressed that he does not attend GoldBod meetings, emphasizing his role as a representation rather than an active participant on the board.
