Asian Markets Mixed as Wall Street Gains Continue
Asian markets showed mixed performance on Tuesday, with most major indices posting gains following Wall Street’s recent surge. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.1% to 70,683.98, returning to levels last seen in early July, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.9% to 6,941.39. Technology stocks in both countries saw volatility, with Advantest climbing 3.9% and SoftBank Group dropping 3.1% after its CEO warned about risks tied to advanced technology. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also declined, shedding 1.5% and 3.7%, respectively.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.8% to 24,234.19, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.6% to 8,735.70. Taiwan’s Taiex and India’s Sensex each edged up slightly. Markets in mainland China remained closed for a holiday. On Monday, U.S. stocks advanced, with the S&P 500 nearing a record high, the Dow Jones rising 0.2%, and the Nasdaq reaching an all-time close. Tech giants like Nvidia and Broadcom led the gains.
Oil prices dipped early Tuesday, with Brent crude falling 0.8% to $99.48 per barrel, and U.S. crude losing 1.1% to $88.46. Analysts noted easing supply pressures in the Middle East, though tensions between the U.S. and Iran kept markets cautious. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield hovered near 5.30%, reflecting inflationary concerns and rising national debt. The U.S. dollar strengthened against the yen and euro.
