Asian Markets Slide Amid Rising Oil Prices, Inflation Concerns
Asian markets declined on Tuesday due to rising oil prices and concerns about inflation, tempering optimism from strong corporate earnings reports.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 in Japan fell 1.6% to 68,098.54, while the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia edged up 0.2% to 9,088.60. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.6% to 6,933.60 after initially surging.
Analysts pointed out that robust earnings reports in Asia are countering worries about the impact of the war in Iran on global oil supplies and prices. Japan imports almost all its oil.
BofA Securities' Masashi Akutsu and Tetsuhiro Tokuyama noted that strong Japanese company earnings for the April-June quarter will likely lead to interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan in the coming months, similar to the US Federal Reserve.
