Asian Markets Slide as Oil Prices Continue to Soar
Asian markets began the day on August 18, 2026, in a downward trend as oil prices continued to rise. Japan's Nikkei 225 declined by 1.6% to 68,098.54, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged up 0.2% to 9,088.60. South Korea's Kospi dropped 0.6% to 6,933.60 after initially surging, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.6% to 25,289.88.
The Shanghai Composite in China shed 0.5% to 3,963.53, despite the optimism generated by robust corporate earnings reports. Analysts pointed out that these strong earnings are countering concerns about inflation and the impact of the war in Iran on global crude oil supplies.
BofA Securities analysts Masashi Akutsu and Tetsuhiro Tokuyama noted that recent strong earnings reports from Japanese companies for the April-June quarter have helped rediscover globally competitive companies across various sectors, including semiconductor production equipment, power equipment, machinery, electronic components, and materials.
