Australia Crude Arrives in South Korea Amid Middle East Supply Instability

A South Korean refinery has imported ultra-light crude oil from Australia for the first time due to supply instability in the Middle East. The 110,000-ton oil tanker carrying 300,000 barrels of Australian ultra-light crude docked at Incheon North Port.

The domestic refinery participated in drilling the gas field and secured the ultra-light crude, which will undergo refining after being transferred to storage facilities via pipes.

This marks the first time a private company has brought ultra-light crude into South Korea. Park Joon-young, Manager of SK Innovation Communications Division, explained that ultra-light crude is lighter than regular crude and can produce various products such as naphtha, aviation fuel, kerosene, and diesel.

The decision to bring in the new oil was made due to the crisis caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a shortage of Middle Eastern crude. However, most South Korean refining facilities are optimized for heavy crude from the Middle East, making it challenging to import light crude from other regions.

Experts estimate that overhauling these facilities would take several months and cost up to trillions of won. To address this issue, a policy approach is needed to encourage the refining industry to upgrade its facilities.
