Australian LNG Exports Rise Amid Global Market Shifts
The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) has released an update of its Australian Gas and LNG Tracker, which provides interactive data visualization on Australia's LNG industry and trade.
The tool uses data from authoritative sources like Kpler and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), as well as IEEFA's own analysis. The updated version expands upon the previous release in June.
A key finding is that Australia continues to export large volumes of LNG, with exports increasing marginally over the past year. Globally, LNG supply increased year-over-year in the first half of 2026 despite a decline in exports from Qatar following the Iran war.
Asian LNG imports fell year-over-year in the first half of 2026, remaining below the peak in 1H24 due to a significant drop in China's imports. LNG exporters accounted for a larger share of Australian gas production at the same time as domestic demand declined.
