Australia's Cattle Market Struggles Under Weather and War Headwinds

Australia's cattle market is facing significant challenges due to weather patterns and geopolitical conflicts, according to Stefan Vogel, general manager for Australia/New Zealand at RaboResearch. In a recent presentation at Ekka Beef Week in Brisbane, Vogel noted that the Australian beef market is affected by El Niño and ongoing wars, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine.

The conflict in the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted urea supplies, with approximately 25% of the world's urea transiting through this area. Although global urea prices have returned to pre-conflict levels, Australian prices remain 30 to 40% higher due to inventory management challenges.

Vogel also mentioned that Australia's fuel security is lower than other major beef-producing nations, contributing to higher diesel costs for farmers. More than 80% of the nation's diesel is imported from countries with larger refining capabilities, such as Korea and Singapore.

Globally, adverse weather patterns are affecting grain prices, which are vital for cattle feedlots. Vogel anticipates an adequate crop overall but notes concerns over drought conditions in Queensland persist.
