Australia's Diesel Economy Faces Crisis as Global Supply Tightens

The Iran conflict has had a significant impact on global energy markets, and Australia's economy is particularly vulnerable to the effects of rising diesel prices. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global oil inventories have fallen by approximately 410 million barrels since the war began, taking stocks below 7.9 billion barrels. The IEA also forecasts that global oil supply will decline by approximately 4.3 million barrels per day on average during 2026, producing a projected supply deficit despite weaker demand.

Australia imports most of its refined petroleum products, with 79% of its consumption supplied by imports. Even domestic refineries rely heavily on imported feedstock, with just under two-thirds coming from abroad. This makes Australia's economy sensitive to disruptions in international petroleum markets.

The IEA's latest figures indicate increasing pressure in downstream markets, particularly for diesel and jet fuel. Diesel exports from Russia, the Middle East, and Asia have fallen by approximately 20% of global seaborne diesel trade, while jet-fuel exports are down by around 34%. Refining margins have risen sharply as supplies tighten.

Australia's economy relies heavily on diesel, with road freight, agriculture, mining, construction, and emergency services all dependent on it. A shortage or sustained increase in the cost of diesel would have far-reaching consequences for the country's industries and consumers.
