Australia's Wheat Export Industry Shifts Towards Self-Regulation
The Australian government has revamped the Wheat Port Code of Conduct, replacing it with a new framework that shifts towards self-regulation. The modified code will take effect from October 1 and will be in place for three years.
According to the federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins, the revised code provides 'appropriate regulatory settings' to support a productive, profitable, and sustainable wheat export industry.
The government had initially decided to phase out the wheat code after a recommendation from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in 2024. The ACCC deemed the code no longer fit for purpose.
GrainGrowers, an organization representing grain growers, expressed concerns about the revised code's potential impact on producers. Chairman Matthew Madden stated that their priority is to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the grains supply chain.
