Austria's Central Bank Holds around 280 Tonnes of Gold Reserves
Austria's central bank, OeNB, manages around 280 tonnes of gold reserves. These reserves serve as a safeguard during times of crisis and strengthen confidence in the country's monetary system.
Gold has played a special role in the financial system for centuries, with many countries holding it as a strategic reserve asset. It provides stability by reinforcing confidence in the euro and is internationally recognised, not tied to any single country or currency.
The OeNB has reduced its gold holdings over the years, but since 2007, it has maintained a stock of 280 tonnes. This storage strategy reduces concentration risk by avoiding reliance on a single location while also ensuring that gold can be mobilised quickly, if needed, through major international trading centres.
The authenticity of gold reserves is ensured through rigorous testing, including precise weight measurements, ultrasound scanning, and X-ray fluorescence analysis to determine the composition of the bar. Gold bars must meet the London Bullion Market Association's Good Delivery standard to be accepted on international markets.
