Azerbaijan Takes Center Stage in EU Energy Security

The war in Iran has exposed Europe's long-running strategy of diversifying its energy partnerships. Azerbaijan, a key player in this strategy, is emerging as an increasingly important supplier to Europe.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) is central to Azerbaijan's role in Europe's energy security. Completed in 2025, TAP has delivered 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe and plans to double its annual capacity by 2027.

Azerbaijan's relationship with Europe dates back to 1999 when the EU-Azerbaijan Partnership and Cooperation Agreement was signed. The agreement laid the groundwork for projects like the Southern Gas Corridor, which aims to improve energy security and diversification in Europe.

The recent Hormuz crisis has highlighted the importance of Azerbaijan's role in Europe's energy security. Senior European and Azerbaijani officials met to emphasize their strategic partnership on energy security and deepen cooperation on the Southern Gas Corridor.
