Azerbaijan-Türkiye Energy Partnership Shifts to Electricity and Renewables

The energy partnership between Azerbaijan and Türkiye is entering a new phase, shifting its focus from oil and natural gas to electricity and renewable energy sources. The joint agenda now focuses on interconnections, export of green energy to Europe, and developing next-generation energy architecture.

The existing infrastructure built over the decades, such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and the Southern Gas Corridor, has transformed the energy relationship between Baku and Ankara. Azerbaijan gained access to international markets with its resources, while Türkiye strengthened its role as an energy transit hub connecting the Caspian region with Europe.

Azerbaijan has supplied 561 million tons of oil and 196 billion cubic meters of gas to Türkiye via existing infrastructure. The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) has transported 40 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to Turkey, with another 7.5 billion cubic meters routed through Turkish territory to European countries.

Türkiye's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, emphasized that cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye extends beyond oil and gas, encompassing mining, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, electricity markets, and transmission and distribution. He noted that the new model adds generation capacity, electrical grids, storage systems, digital technologies, and the capability to balance energy systems.
