Baker Hughes Leads Alliance to Develop Venezuelan Natural Gas Infrastructure
Baker Hughes, PDVSA, Lindsayca, and Fulcrum LNG have formed a strategic alliance to develop natural gas infrastructure in Venezuela, with plans to create a pathway for future liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports. The partnership aims to restore and expand existing infrastructure, connecting upstream gas resources with processing and transportation systems to strengthen both domestic supply and potential export capabilities. While the agreement outlines a broad industrial roadmap, specific investments and projects will require further approvals and regulatory compliance.
The initiative prioritizes domestic needs, focusing on improving midstream infrastructure such as pipelines, processing systems, and compression facilities to enhance power generation and local gas supply. Venezuela holds approximately 195 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, making it a significant player in South America's energy sector, though much of this potential remains untapped. The alliance seeks to address this challenge by integrating technology, financing, and market access to unlock the country's gas resources.
Looking ahead, the most ambitious goal is establishing Venezuela as an LNG exporter. This would require developing liquefaction and commercialization infrastructure, with Fulcrum LNG evaluating potential projects over the medium and long term. Baker Hughes will provide technological solutions, including oil and gas field development, gas infrastructure, and LNG technologies, leveraging its long-standing presence in Venezuela's energy sector. Additionally, Baker Hughes has signed a separate memorandum with New Stratus Energy to support future oil and gas developments in the country.
The alliance represents a comprehensive strategy to modernize Venezuela's energy sector, from reservoir management to international commercialization. While the framework is in place, the next steps involve transforming these plans into executable projects, subject to investment decisions and regulatory approvals.
