Baltic Wheat Supplants Black Sea Supplies Amid Export Disruptions
Disruptions to grain exports from the Black Sea region have led to a surge in imports of Baltic wheat. According to UkrAgroConsult, about 1 million tons of wheat have been booked for shipment from ports in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia in August, up around 50% year-on-year.
This increase is particularly notable among buyers that traditionally source Russian wheat, including Turkey, the UAE, and Sudan. Demand has also strengthened from traditional buyers of Baltic grain, such as Nigeria and South Africa.
Market participants warn that if Black Sea export conditions do not improve in the coming weeks, the Baltic region could increase shipments to less traditional destinations, including Turkey, Sudan, Libya, and Egypt.
