Copper Finds Sweet Spot as Demand Surges and Supply Struggles
Copper has found itself in a sweet spot between intensifying demand and stagnant supply response. Despite broader macroeconomic headwinds, copper's demand remains resilient due to growing investment in energy security and infrastructure.
According to Sprott, the firm notes that prices have surged to record highs, diverging from traditional industrial cycles. This reflects a structural shift in copper's demand profile beyond its links to construction, manufacturing, and consumer activity.
Treatment charges (TCs), which miners traditionally pay smelters to process copper concentrate into refined metal, have moved deep into negative territory. Smelters are now paying miners around US$150 per tonne to secure concentrate, highlighting the shift in bargaining power towards copper miners.
