Bangladesh Aims to Boost LNG Capacity with Two New Import Terminals
Bangladesh plans to develop two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminals by 2030, aiming to meet rising demand for the fuel. A floating storage and regasification unit is expected to be commissioned by 2028, with a capacity of approximately 600 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd).
The land-based terminal at Matarbari will have a regasification capacity of around 1,000 mmcfd. Bangladesh currently relies on two floating LNG import terminals, which can regasify up to 1,100 mmcfd.
The country is anticipating a significant increase in demand for LNG over the coming decades. From 2026 to 2030, it will require approximately 3-4 million metric tons per annum (mtpa) of additional LNG. The requirement is expected to increase significantly to around 17-18 mtpa between 2031 and 2040.
Bangladesh imported nearly 7 million tonnes of LNG last year, with the bulk coming from Qatar. However, it has been relying on spot imports this year after QatarEnergy declared force majeure on its shipments due to damage at its facilities amid the US-Iran war.
