Bangladesh Ceramics Industry Hit by Gas Shortages and Import Duties
The ceramics industry in Bangladesh is facing significant challenges due to gas shortages, high import duties, and foreign currency constraints. The inconsistent supply of natural gas has become the most pressing issue for manufacturers, with many operating at below 40% capacity.
According to Sifat Arman, Deputy Managing Director of BHL Group, some factories have temporarily suspended operations due to inadequate gas availability. This has negatively affected manufacturers' cash flows and financial sustainability, making it difficult to meet bank loan repayments.
Industry representatives have called for urgent government intervention to ensure a stable and reliable gas supply, alongside measures to ease the broader cost pressures affecting manufacturers.
