Bangladesh Faces Gas Crunch as Damaged FSRU Remains Out of Commission

The damaged FSRU at Moheshkhali is expected to resume partial operation in one week, but full restoration will take around two weeks. Foreign experts from the UK and Singapore have begun working on the unit. The partial operation of one boiler could supply 300 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of regasified liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The accident has caused a significant reduction in Bangladesh's overall natural gas supply, which fell to around 2,151 mmcfd from its pre-accident level of 2,640 mmcfd. The country's gas-fired power plants are particularly affected, with electricity generation reduced by around 1,200 megawatts.

Consumers have expressed frustration over the situation, with long queues at CNG filling stations and households relying on alternative cooking methods due to low gas pressure. A CNG-run auto rickshaw driver stated that waiting times for refueling could exceed three hours, resulting in lost income and increased transport costs.
