Bangladesh FSRU Fire Triggers Nationwide Gas Crisis

A devastating fire on an FSRU (Floating Storage and Regasification Unit) in Bangladesh has triggered a severe gas crisis, affecting the entire country. The US-based Excelerate Energy's FSRU was damaged in the fire on Tuesday, forcing its shutdown and resulting in a massive shortfall of approximately 450 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas.

The sudden loss of this vital component has disrupted industrial production, forced gas-fired power plants to scale back electricity generation, and severely impacted the transport sector. According to Farhan Noor, Secretary General of the Bangladesh CNG Filling Station and Conversion Workshop Owners Association, CNG stations are struggling to operate continuously due to plummeting gas pressure.

The crisis has also affected ordinary citizens, with residents in Dhaka and other regions reporting intensified gas shortages, leaving many households unable to cook for most of the day. In some neighborhoods, the supply has halted entirely, mirroring the struggles of key industrial zones where factories are scaling down production to cope with low pressure.

US-based Excelerate Energy has brought in foreign experts to repair the damaged FSRU and restore operations as soon as possible. The company aims to expedite repairs and minimize the impact of the crisis on Bangladesh's energy infrastructure.
