Bangladesh Gas Crisis May Drag On for Another Two Weeks

The gas crisis in Bangladesh may continue for another 10-15 days due to ongoing repairs at a fire-damaged floating LNG facility, according to Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood.

Two LNG cargoes remain waiting offshore as the disruption prevents their unloading. As a result, households are facing low gas pressure for cooking, while power plants are struggling due to reduced gas supply.

The minister stated that Bangladesh has become increasingly dependent on imported LNG, LPG, and other fossil fuels as domestic gas production continues to decline. The country spent around $3.65 billion on fuel imports over the past six months, putting substantial pressure on foreign exchange reserves.
