Bangladesh Gas Crisis Persists Amid LNG Import Disruptions

A prolonged gas shortage has gripped Bangladesh, causing widespread hardship for households and industries. The crisis is expected to persist for another two weeks, according to Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood.

The minister attributed the shortage to a fire at one of the country's two Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), which has severely disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. As a result, Bangladesh currently has two LNG cargoes waiting offshore but is unable to unload them.

The gas shortage has forced many households to rely on electric cookers and other costly alternatives, increasing their expenses. Industries are also scaling back production due to inadequate gas supply, raising concerns among business leaders over manufacturing losses and delays in production.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit apologized to the public for the hardship and expressed optimism that the situation would begin improving from next week.
