Bangladesh Gas Shortage Disrupts Daily Life and Economy

A severe gas shortage in Bangladesh has caused widespread disruptions to daily life in Dhaka and other areas. The crisis, which began after a fire damaged one of two boilers at a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in Cox's Bazar on July 21, has left many compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered auto-rickshaws and public transport vehicles unable to operate.

Vehicle drivers have been waiting in long queues for hours or even overnight to receive a gas supply, but often return empty-handed. This has led to higher fares being charged by drivers who are willing to operate, with some contract fares doubling or tripling in price. Many commuters are now forced to pay these inflated rates or rely on alternative modes of transportation.

The shortage has also impacted household kitchens, with gas pressure reducing to near zero or flickering feebly in many areas of Dhaka. Residents have been forced to use temporary clay stoves and cook with firewood, while those who can afford it are turning to expensive electric cookers or LPG cylinders.

According to transport owners, more than half of their vehicles are not operating due to the gas shortage, resulting in significant financial losses for both owners and drivers. The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of Bangladesh's energy infrastructure and the need for urgent action to address the crisis.
