Bangladesh Gas Shortage Sparks Calls for Sustainable Energy Solutions
Bangladesh's recurring energy crisis has exposed its critical structural vulnerability. The country's acute shortage of natural gas has taken a heavy toll on key sectors, with industries and manufacturing bearing the brunt of prolonged gas shortages.
The recent telephone conversation between the prime ministers of Bangladesh and Malaysia is significant. Bangladesh sought Kuala Lumpur's cooperation in easing its mounting energy difficulties, following the shutdown of a US company-operated Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) at Maheshkhali on July 21.
Malaysia's positive response may help Bangladesh navigate the immediate crisis, but external assistance can only provide temporary relief. A coherent national strategy is needed to ensure long-term energy security.
