A severe gas shortage is gripping Bangladesh, leaving residents to scramble for alternative cooking methods. The crisis has been exacerbated by a fire at the Excelerate Energy terminal in Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar, which supplies liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the country.

The floating LNG regasification terminal that converts imported LNG into pipeline gas remains out of operation, forcing authorities to estimate daily gas demand at 3.8 billion cubic feet but supply only around 2.15 billion cubic feet since last year's fire.

Petrobangla Director (Operations and Mines) Md Rafiqul Islam told Prothom Alo that the technical team is working to repair the damaged terminal, but it may take more time to restore operations.
